With the great news this week that Paul Morton, has had his plaster off and is doing some light weight training on his leg, and Chris Smiths knee injury was not as bad as first feared so we started the game in good spirits. We
were also boosted by the fact that the reserves had no game, so Mat Holmes, Paul Grosse and Dave Williams were added to our squad.
We played Grosse at the heart of our defence along side Gaz Jones, Holmes on right mid field, and put Williams up front to partner Rich Hanslow. It was played on a small pitch in blustery conditions so we knew we needed to
play the ball on the floor. We did this with some good passing football and were soon making chances. It took about 20 minutes for us to break the deadlock though, with a great finish from Holmes from some distance out, giving the keeper no chance. We continued to dominate the game and
increased our lead to 0-4 by half time with Holmes getting another along with Williams and Hanslow.
Second half was much the same as the first really, with us still dominating play, although Shobnall never gave up and did create a few chances. We looked strong in every position and Venning, as always, was winning everything in mid field working tirelessly. It was then that Tom Fletcher
produced a cracking volley to make it 0-5 and we were cruising. With 20 minutes left we gave Chris Smith a run out to see if his knee was okay and he was soon back to his best. For the last 15minutes we made another two
changes, bringing on Dean Acton and Zak Venning and 0-5 it finished.
I would like to thank Grossy, Williams and Holmes for playing today because they did make a difference! Their experience helped us and I thought their attitude was first class with their encouragement to the youngsters. It was only our second clean sheet and we never really looked like conceding. Up front Williams and Hanslow linked up like they'd been playing together for years, probably training together helped? Think Todd Foster had his best game for us too, and impressed me with the amount of work he put in. So all in all a great team performance, with both teams playing with the right spirit and a good referee, with the result to match taking us back into second in the league so well done.
