Lye Town vs Gresley Rovers
After a good run in the cup, league matches needed to be won as we are sitting near the foot of the table albeit with games in hand.
Lye town had started the season pretty well only losing two of their games. We talked about starting well and keeping a tight rein on our opposition, unfortunately this was not to be as we were hit with a killer blow after only 20 seconds when a poor clearance led to a goalmouth scramble, which ended up with the ball in the net.
Disaster were the thoughts in my head as we now had to pick ourselves up and get on with it, we had done it before and I was sure we were capable of doing it again. Gresley started to play good passing football on a pitch, which was suiting Lye's long ball tactics. With Jak Ward causing a the problems for Lye, defensive midfielder Lee Mitchell sitting deep was set up 25 yards out and duly delivered a sweet strike into the right hand side of the net giving the keeper little chance and seeing us draw level, this is how it stayed until the interval even though Gresley were piling on the pressure.
Second half saw the one thing I would never of expected, a carbon copy of the first half goal and we were down 2-1 within seconds, as you could imagine we were fuming after what had been said at half time and this was not in the script. Again we were playing catch up but unlike in the first half we did not take the game to them enough and seemed complacent with basic mistakes happening all over the pitch. Formation changes saw Jak ward push just behind the strikers and Andy Mottershead push in of the back three, unfortunately it made little difference and with 10 minutes remaining Lye beat the offside trap and slotted home from the edge of the box to put the game beyond any doubt.
Key performances from Lewis Gadsby and Jak Ward were not enough and a good team performance is important.
Performance rating 6/10 recovered well after early goal but whimpered away as game went on.
