Gresley Rovers vs Rugby United

Gresley Reserves completed their league campaign with a deserved 2-1 victory at home to Rugby Utd. Rovers almost took the lead as early as the 3rd minute but Earl Alexander’s shot from 18 yards was turned around the post by Paul Cudby in the Rugby goal. Jon Jenkinson should have scored on 15 minutes but he shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

It was Rugby who took the lead after 21 minutes when Anthony Episcopo was brought down in the penalty area by youth team fullback Martyn Smith. Episcopo converted the resultant spot kick.

The lead lasted until a minute before half time. Mykey Pryce was fouled just outside the Rugby penalty area and Danny Lonergan fired home the free kick to level things up.

Half Time: 1 – 1.

The second half saw Gresley apply more pressure without really creating any clearcut chances. Time looked to be running out until Rugby’s Anderson handled inside the box on 86 minutes to allow Jon.Jenkinson to blast the resultant penalty to the keeper’s left to score.

Rovers should have had another penalty a minute later when Jenkinson crossed into the box and Cudby challenged Ed Walker putting both arms around him to pull him down, but nothing was given.

Final score: 2 – 1.
