Gresley Rovers vs Newhall United

Gresley ran out worthy winners in this local derby with a solid performance against the Midland Combination Division One side.

Gresley started slowly and struggled to keep the ball in the first 15 minutes, never looking in too much trouble, but resorting to long clearances from the final third. Newhall took the lead after some uncertainty on the edge of the 18 yard box, Kennyson was caught in no- mans land and was lobbed easily. This brought Gresley to life and they totally dominated the rest of the first half. Dave Williams delivered a great corner from the left and Paul Grosse steered the ball home from five yards after the keeper failed to hold on to the ball. Greg Smith added a second shortly after with a long range effort. Gresley went three up 5 mins later, the keeper being totally deceived by a wicked 30 yard swerving strike from Joe Miller.Ryan Yearsley left the field with a calf injury on 40 minutes, and his replacement Jordan Blair caused havoc as soon as he entered the field. A mazy run on the right into the box left Ky Hall with a comfortable finish. 4-1 H/T.

The second half was always going to be more of a challenge as Newhall stepped up a gear, however Gresley added a fifth when Jordan played Ky in again for his second of the game. Gresley pressed on with the three central midfielders looking to add to the score. This left some room for Newhall front men to press on and put the Gresley back four under pressure. It was no surprise when Newhall pulled a goal back after a succession of attacks. Gresley remained on the front foot and Jordan Blair finished the scoring, coolly rounding the keeper. F/T 6-2.

A great victory for the lads, who were delighted to call Manager Dave Acton - on holiday in Spain, with the good news!

Well done to all the players for their spirit and determination in the absence of Dave, I know he is absolutely delighted with this one. Thanks to Steve Gee (youth team manager) and Rich Wallis (U11s coach) for their help.
