Gresley Rovers vs Highgate United
Saturday saw the visit of bottom side Highgate, so spirits were high at the prospect of stopping the losing streak.
This we did with a good display of football in the first half, we came in at the break 3-0 up through a well taken header by Paul Grosse, the potential goal of the season struck from 25 yards by Darren Hurr and a well taken drive by Greg Smith after what seemed an age of pinball in the box. Highgate suffered rotten luck losing two players early doors to injuries and with them only having one sub they played from one-nil down with only ten men.
In the second half we came out and didn't really build on our lead and to be fair to Highgate they had the better of the half without really threatening our goal.
I was very disappointed with the second half display as far to many players took their foot off the gas and let them off the hook; a better team would have punished us.
The most pleasing aspect from the game was the performances put in by Chris Mawbey and Chris Vernon, they played a full 90 minutes and I’m sure any first timer to the Moat wouldn't have thought it was only their second game at this level, so well done to both of you and keep it up, it could have been a hat trick of youth teamers in the starting line up if the impressive Jack Ward had not had a groin strain, so get well soon Jack.
This week should see the debuts for two new young players from outside the club one from foreign shores I’ll say no more for the moment, you’ll have to wait and see.
