On Tuesday night we travelled away to Quorn in the league cup - our fourth away game in a row.
Quorn knocked us out of this competition last season in a very unsavoury encounter in which they scored the winner in the last seconds of extra time. That is as good a reason as any as to why our 4 - 1 victory was very sweet for me, that and the fact it was our first victory of the season, but the main point of pleasure for John, Dave and myself was the manner in which we disposed of the opposition.
We truly set the standards for the season on Tuesday night and all our shortcomings over the 4 previous games disappeared.
A great deal of character was shown by the boys who not only delivered a football lesson to the opposition, but they also got stuck in and grafted when was required, which is all we can ask of them.
The game didn't get off to the best start for us when Mykey Pryce who is only just back from living in America limped off with a hamstring injury within the first 5 minutes, to be replaced by Darren Hurr. This caused us to reshuffle the line up.
Although in the first 15 minutes it was all very close, we started to dominate midway through the half and that was underlined by a magnificent 25 yard shot from Ryan Yearsley which found the top corner.
Then what can only be described as dream goal came after a series of quality passes finally found Earl Alexander, who with a jink of his body found a yard and whipped in a pin point cross which Ian Pitt met like a rising salmon with his head and made no mistake, two-nil.
We came out in the second half and created chance after chance but no break through, then the goal came but at the other end. Quorn must have then felt they were in with a shout.
But on conceding the goal we stepped it up another gear playing some great football and looking very solid and comfortable at the back. In fact it was one of the defenders Nathan Tate that had a hand in our next two goals, rampaging down the left time after time.
The third and forth goals were converted by Ian Pitt to complete his much deserved hat trick, unfortunately Quorn wouldn't give him the match ball after though.
A great result for us and I hope everybody who travelled to the game enjoyed it as much as I did. We are finally at home on Saturday to Shepshed so let's hope we can continue the good form in front of our own crowd.
