Gresley Rovers vs Alfreton Athletic
The Reserves made it to the Semi Finals of the Derbyshire cup with a 6-4 win over Alfreton Athletic in an entertaining game at the Moat Ground.
Carl Slater, impressive since his move from Shepshed earlier this month smacked a fine effort against the bar as Rovers signalled their attacking intentions early on.
Rovers took the lead on 13 minutes after a Matt Moran free kick was headed back into the path of Ryan Yearsley who drove the ball through a crowd of players into the net. Matt Moran almost increased the lead when his fine run saw him beat 3 players on the right to create a chance but his shot was off target.
Alfeton equalised on 30 minutes when a Smith corner was converted at the near post by Drury. It didn't stay level for long. A free kick from the left was played into Jon Jenkinson’s feet and the striker cleverly laid the ball back to Matt Moran to smash the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards.
Athetic equalised on the stroke of half time when another corner caused mayhem in the Rovers box and Sharpe seized on the loose ball to score past Ian Roberts.
Gresley took the lead in the early seconds of the second half with their first attack. Neat play between Carl Timms and Matt Moran gave Ryan Yearsley the chance to shoot home.
The visitors levelled for a 3rd time on 66 minutes when a cross from the right found Scott as Paul Grosse slipped and the Alfreton player coolly slotted past Roberts.
Rovers took the lead for a 4th time when a short corner routine ended up with Carl Slater driving home a fine effort from 22 yards out into the top corner of the net.
Ryan Yearsley completed a much deserved hat-trick on 81 minutes when keeper Holmes dropped a corner at his feet and he shot home to make it 5-3.
Two minutes later, the game was effectively over as a Timms’ free kick was volleyed home by the on fire Yearsley. A Mickey Sandar own goal deep in injury time made it a final score of 6-4.
