Gil's first senior games was with Mickelover RBL were he won three Player-of-the-Year awards and a Derbyshire Junior Cup winner's medal and a member of their East Midlands Regional League double-winning side.
Then he joined Nottingham Forest where he played at Central League level.
He also played in the Burton Albion side that reached the FA Trophy final in 1987.
Gil won NPL President's Cup, NPL League Cup and Birmingham Senior Cup medals and was a member of the side that reached the First Round proper of the FA Cup.
He moved to Worksop Town and Heanor Town where he was a member of the side that won the BE Webbe Cup. .
With Gresley he won two Derbyshire Senior Cup winner's medals, a Banks's League Championship medal and a FA Vase runners-up medal.
In 1993 Gil left to join Rocester.
