George Haywood was a centre-forward from his earliest days when he combined football with working down the pit at Coleorton Colliery.
On 8 October 1928 George had a trial with Southend United and it was during his time with Gresley Rovers that he was noticed by Birmingham City after which he never worked down the mines again.
As understudy to Joe Bradford (the England International) he had the excellent record of 15 goals in 38 games spread over 5 seasons including a hat-trick at Everton.
He also had trials with Warwickshire CCC as a spin bowler.
He maintained his scoring form at Chesterfield with 7 goals in 16 games. With Cradley Heath he scored 24 goals in half a season in the Birmingham League from where he signed for
Southport in December 1935 but he made little impression there and was back at Cradley Heath the following season.
He returned to New Lount Colliery where he was employed up to his retirement
Sadly George died on 25th January 1992 at Coalville Community Hospital of bronchopneumonia after being admitted with a seriously inflamed knee.
