Danny Wainwright
Debut game
v RAF T (a) 9th September 1943
Final game for Gresley Rovers first team
v Coalville Town (a) 27th August 1951
Danny had three spells with Gresley.
Top scorer 1947-1948 with 34 league and 10 cup goals.
Top scorer 1943 -1944 with 60 league and 8 cup goals (not all goals recorded)
During a second round of the Coalville Charity Cup at the Hugglescote Ground on 14th December 1946, Danny scored 9 goals which is still a Gresley Rovers record. The final score was Pegsons 0-14 Gresley Rovers.
Steve Dolman adds:
Danny played for Derby Reserves in 1945-1946 and scored 60 goals in one of the seasons. My Dad remembers him as "a little feller who knew where the goals were". He broke his ankle playing for Derby Reserves v Nottingham Forest in (I think) 1946 or could have gone on to something bigger.
My Dad was behind the goals in that 14-0 win and when one of the goals went in (Dad has told me for years Gresley were at least ten up by this stage) the goalie turned to the crowd and said:"Bugger it - I thought that were going wide!"...
During the War years 1939-1945 records are not reliable as many games and players were not published in the local press.
Also, players were called up and played as and when they were available.
These figures are based on the most reliable available.
