Following impressive displays in the Colts and 17 reserve games, John replaced veteran Fred Tapping for his first team debut in a Birmingham Combination game against the league leaders Atherstone Town at the Moat Ground.
John scored in the 2-2 draw.
For the season 1956-1957 John joined Burton Albion but after just one season returned to Gresley.
He was the leading scorer for seasons 1961-1962 (39 goals inc. 3 hat tricks) & 1962-1963 (26 goals) and joint leading scorer 1959-1960 (8 goals).
John also played one game in goal against Sutton Town at the Moat Ground owing to the unavailability of the regular keepers.
John sadly died on 7th December 2014.
