Josiah Robinson
Playing 1885 - 1901 seasons
Debuted at the age of 17 in 1885
Joe died on 8th December 1948 aged 81.
Excerpt from his obituary in the Burton Mail sent to us by his great granddaughter :-
"At the age of 17 he began his football career with Gresley Rovers as center-forward, when the club played on the old Mushroom Lane ground. He was prominent among the goal scorers, until, about ten years later, an unfortunate knee injury put him off the active list.
However, he continued to take a keen interest in the club's management, and with his old friend, the late Mr. Joe Sharpe, started the Gresley Charity Cup competition, which has been the means of raising large sums of money for worthy causes. He played for the Rovers in the first year of the tournament, when Swadlincote Town were beaten by three goals to nil in the final.
This was in 1894, the same year in which Gresley defeated Tutbury by the same score in the final of the Burton Cup competition.
He was an enthusiastic supporter of Derby County, and seldom missed a home match."
