He was the defensive half of twin brothers. His brother was centre-forward Ron. Paul was the most expensive defender in England when he became Manchester City's record signing for £350,000 on June 1, 1978

Left to take the position of manager at Southport FC after taking Gresley Rovers to the Southern Football League (Dr Martens) Premier League Championship 1996-1997.
Appointed manager Stalybridge Celtic for the start of 2001-2002 but left after the team struggled to adapt to the higher level.
Appointed manager of Ashton United in February 2005, left by mutual consent the following December as the club struggled to establish itself after relegation from Conference North.

Paul sadly died after a long illness on 24th November 2016 aged 60 years.
