Fosse debut (WW1) v Notts County (H) 13.1.1917; (postwar) v Tottenham Hotspur (H) 11.9.1919 (scored twice) Fosse's leading marksman in wartime competition, Cliff hit three counters in his first two senior games for City, and was finally persuaded by Peter Hodge to sign professionally just over a year later.
The local inside-left didn't find it easy, however, to compete for a first-team slot with imports like Jim Macauley and Harry Graham, and eventually moved on to make his mark elsewhere: as a goalscorer in Division Three (North), and as a more studious contributor to the attacks of Second Division Saints and Forest.
Cliff, the youngest of eleven children, had been an elastic web factory hand, then a teenage collier during WW1, and was sent back to pit work only four days after enlisting for active service in the summer of 1918.
Twenty years later, he was noted as cricket captain of Hugglescote Albion CC. (Culpably, we have assigned an erroneous birthdate to Cliff in all previous versions of this work, and we have thus had to remove our claim for him as the club's youngest WW1 scorer from the Records section). His brother Tom played at centre-forward for Lincoln City in 1902-03; and his nephews Fred and Jack were also on the Filbert Street books.
LFFC/LCFC Apps: FL 28; WW1 75. Goals: FL 8; WW1 33.
