Charlie was sold to Bradford City allong with two team mates George Draycott and Sol Tremelling for the princely collective sum of £150 season in February 1913.

Charlie spent much of the war back in Leicestershire when not on Army service, and became a regular for both Fosse and Coalville Swifts from late 1916, usually in the pivotal position.
By the time Bradford City let him move on to Hartlepools United in September 1924, Charlie had amassed a record of 208 League appearances (13 goals) for them, and he eventually returned to Bradford as a licensee. He had started his career with Ibstock Albion.
