Gresley Rovers have signed former Burton Albion midfielder Craig Weston from Beazer Midland club Grantham.
Weston, 21, goes straight into Rovers’ reserve team tonight against Cheslyn Hay at the Moat Ground (7.30).He will play alongside skipper Richard Denby, who is beginning a comeback after a lengthy absence with a knee injury.
Manager Frank Northwood said last night: “We’re very pleased to have signed Craig – we’ve been chasing him for a few weeks now. I got a hell of a report on him from Dudley’s manager after he played against them twice in a fortnight. He’ll be looking to make his first team debut for us on Saturday at Oldbury.
But Northwood faces a defensive problem after full back Martin Dick limped out of Saturday’s game against Tipton with a knee injury.
“Martin has a problem with the same knee he injured last season,” said Northwood. “He had his cartilage removed but apparently there is still something in there. It looks as if he’ll be out two or three weeks.”
But Northwood was heartened by the news that Denby could be on his way back to fitness.
He admitted: “We’ve certainly missed Richard but it’s pleased me that Scott Elliott has stood in for him and he’s done a great job.”
