Cheetham Stays
Gresley Rovers are pleased to announce that Andy Cheetham has chosen to remain with the Club, turning down an offer from Dr Martens Premier Division side Ilkeston Town.
Andy, following talks with Chairman Mark Evans and Manager Jon Newsome broke the news to the Chairman yesterday (Monday 12th August).

Mark Evans commented that he was delighted that Andy had chosen to stay with the Club, “its fantastic news, I am a very pleased Chairman – the fans will be delighted, Andy is a great player, well respected by his fellow players and loved by the supporters”.

Mark Evans revealed that he spoke to Jon Newsome shortly after hearing from Andy, who was equally “pleased” by the news.

The Chairman added “we have had meaningful and constructive dialogue with Andy; he knew that we wanted him to stay. Andy has turned down a very attractive offer to stay with Gresley Rovers. Andy epitomises everything that is good about this football club. I walked around the ground during the match on Saturday and everybody was asking about Andy and expressing the hope that he would stay.”

Andy joined Gresley Rovers from Stapenhill and has been with the Club for over 6 years, progressing through the reserves under Alan Titterton, to becoming a first team regular a few seasons ago.

Jon Newsome commented that Andy has been fantastic; “he is strong, quick and knows how to use the ball. He is Gresley through and through. I am delighted he will be playing for Gresley Rovers”

Mark Evans further commented that “this expression of loyalty and commitment demonstrates what ‘playing for the love of ’ is all about, and proves to me that there are those, where money is not everything and being part of something is equally important. Gresley Rovers is not able to match the salary budgets of many of our League and Premier League rivals – but we still manage to attract and keep good players – that I think says a lot about this Club and perhaps more about those clubs that hope to tempt players away.”

“We have a great set of lads at Gresley and I am really pleased with the way the new players have settled in”
