The final countdown

The moment of truth has arrived for Gresley Rovers and Rocester as the titanic tussle for the Banks’s League title reaches its climax this weekend.
By Monday evening one or the other could be crowned as champions – or both could be left trailing in the slipstream of Hinckley Town,

Never before has there been so many ifs, buts and maybe’s at such a late stage of a Banks’s campaign which could quite literally go to the very last kick.

Gresley, Rocester and Hinckley will all finish on the 82-point mark if they can finish the season in winning style.

Should that be the case then Hinckley, boasting comfortably the best goal difference, will be the new champions, with Rovers runners-up for the third time in their history and Rocester in third place.

Irrespective of the Romans’ result, however, Gresley will take the title if they take maximum points and Hinckley don’t.

There is, of course, always the possibility that Rovers and Hinckley will make a mess of it tomorrow and hand the title on a plate to Rocester, providing they can win at Hinckley Athletic.

Gresley boss Frank Northwood was philosophic about it all last night.

He said: “If we can show the commitment and character that won us the Derbyshire Senior Cup then I see no reason why we shouldn’t win both our games at Malvern and Wolverhampton Casuals. Then all we do is hope that the others slip up.”

Rocester’s Alan Beaman fears that the championship will land in the lap of Hinckley Town; especially as the Leicestershire side considerably improved their chances last night with a 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Casuals.

He said: “They are going well and in my book they’re the team I’d put my money on. We’re in the same position as Gresley – we’ve got to finish off with maximum points and hope for the best.”
