Beat-the-clock promotion bid at Moat Ground

Gresley Rovers are hoping to speed up Moat Ground improvements in a last gasp bid to win Beazer Homes League status.
On the eve of their vital Banks’s League clash at Rocester, Rovers revealed plans to bring forward work on the construction of their new 220-seater stand.

Gresley officials were shocked earlier this week by Beazer secretary Dennis Strudwick’s pronouncement that the original timetable would not meet grading requirements.

Strudwick confirmed that the Moat Ground would be judged “as seen” at next month’s inspection and not on the basis of a promise that work would be completed by the end of June.

Now Rovers’ chairman Peter Hall and committee colleagues are pulling out all the stops in a desperate attempt to bring the ground up to scratch.

Their main objective is to bring forward work on the new stand, originally scheduled to be completed over a period of six weeks.

Hall said: “We’re in touch with the contractors and we’re hoping to bring the work forward in time for inspection. The stand should take only about a week to build. Our problem is the availability of materials.

“I can’t make any promises, but we’re definitely giving it a go. I can assure our supporters that we’ll do everything in our power to get the job done in time.”
