Rovers miss Cup chance

Gresley Rovers Evans Halshaw Floodlit Cup tie with Eastwood Town at the Moat Ground became a victim of the weather today.
The Moatmen were hoping to leap to the top of the group in the competition by defeating the HFS Loan Leaguers who currently lead the Eastern section on goal difference.Rovers’ secretary Peter Jenkinson said today: “The high winds have turned the floodlights upside down. If we put the lights on it would look more like an airport runway than a football ground, with the lights shinning upwards.
“And with the weather like it is no-one is prepared to go up there and turn them round,” he added.
It was hoped to rearrange the game for Thursday night but the Eastwood club were reluctant because they have an important league match on Saturday.
Postponement means disappointment for Rovers’ recently signed striker Derek Christopher. He was hoping to make his second appearance for the Moatmen after completing a suspension.
However, it spells good news for Christopher’s former Paget Rangers team mate Wayne Scally, who has more time to recover after suffering slight concussion in a reserve team outing.
