Frank makes title pledge

Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood today issued a message of defiance to his critics – and a warning to his players.
As the Banks’s League leaders prepared for tonight’s visit Chasetown (7.30pm). Northwood said: “Those people who say we’re not going to win anything this season don’t know what they’re talking about. I feel we’ll win the league. I’ve been at Gresley 4 ½ years and I’ve never let the club down.

“When things are going wrong I’m just the guy to put them right. I’ll soon replace players who aren’t doing the business. But as I’ve said before – you can’t do a job if you haven’t got the tools and our injury problems have been a real setback.

“Now we’ve got several players approaching fitness but, while the guys who’ve been in the side have done marvellously well, I feel they’re looking over their shoulders and wondering when they’re going to lose their places instead of fighting for their shirts.

“They’ve got to buckle down and fight to put things right, starting tonight. It should be a tough one of us because Chasetown don’t let many goals in. All I can ask from the fans is for patience and for them to get behind us.”

Striker Paul Acklam, who as an ankle injury, is Northwood’s major doubt. Brian Beresford and Steve Snaith are left out of a 15-man squad.
