Rovers fight off swoop for Denby

Gresley Rovers last night warded off the latest Burton Albion bid to lure a big name from the Moat Ground.
Rovers, currently awaiting compensation following the defection of coach Steve Dolby’s, responded to an inquiry for Richard Denby by slapping a ‘not for sale’ notice on their star midfielder.Manager Frank Northwood said today: “ Burton came on to me last night and asked me to name a price for Denby. They didn’t like the figure I came up with, but the fact that Denby isn’t going anywhere. He’s our best asset and there’s no way we want to lose him. What pleases me most of all, is that when I told Richard about Burton’s interest, he immediately said he preferred to stay with us.”
Northwood admitted, however, that he was worried that Albion might have their sights set on other Rovers players.
“Four or five of my lads could be targets, but at least we’ve got them all sewn up on contracts.”
Brewers’ chairman this morning confirmed Albion’s interest in Denby. He said: “We have asked Gresley to name a price and we are now considering whether to make a firm offer.”
