Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood has taken the first step towards building a Banks’s League championship side for 1990.
Northwood, determined to go one better next term than this year’s disappointing runners-up spot, moved north to sign highly experienced players from the Derby area.Paul Turner, a 28-year-old sweeper, full back or midfielder and striker Steve Cant, also 28, put pen to paper for Gresley on Sunday night.
Said Northwood: “It’s always good to have new faces in the squad and both these players are highly rated. Turner was at Heanor Town last season but didn’t enjoy it. Cant hasn’t played for a while so we’ll have to get him fit but reports I’ve had say he’s a bit special.”
Both players have spent time on the Nottingham Forest groundstaff, Turner having spent four years at the City Ground and Cant two.
Turner also had a brief spell with Burton Albion in the build up to the 1986-87 campaign, while Cant picked up a losers’ medal with Alfreton Town when Gresley won the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time two years ago.
Rovers are still awaiting the official letter detailing the reasons for their failure to gain promotion to the Beazer Homes League Midland Division.
