Gresley Rovers earned a potentially lucrative home FA Cup tie with HFS Loans League leaders Witton Albion on September 16 with a 2-1 win over Manchester based Chadderton on Saturday.
Gresley missed a string of chances but survived almost as many goal mouth scrapes before going through on the strength of first half strikes from Paul Acklam – who will miss the Witton tie through suspension – and man-of-the-match Kieron Smith.Manager Frank Northwood said afterwards: “I thought we controlled the game from start to finish. The home side came at us in the second half but when you’re 2-0 down you’ve no alternative. It’s results that matter in cup games and in the end we got the right one.”
But Rovers’ triumph was marred by injury to defended Martin Dick. The full back damaged knee ligaments early in the game and is in splints after spending Saturday night at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.
