Newsome to play for Gresley
Gresley Rovers manager Jon Newsome will play this season but only as a last resort.
Jon, the former Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City and Leeds United central defender had his league career ended by an injury. At Leeds he was a member of the successful side that won the old Division One championship in 1991/ 92 season beating Manchester United to the title.

And with the insurance matter now settled he is now able to play for Gresley if he feels he is needed.

"I came to Gresley to begin my management career and not really planning to play, but I will if necessary.

"I have joined in the pre-season training to help the lads out. They appreciate it when they see the gaffer joining in all the hard work. It's boosts the morale of the players.

" At present I'm a long way off being fit but if I was needed to play during the season then I could but I would see it as a bit of insurance rather than a permanent solution.

"Central defence is one of the areas we need to look at. Barry Woolley left us to join Ilkeston and now that position needs to be strengthened. We have had a couple of triallists for the Bass Vase games who have done well.

"I also think Andy Cheetham could end up in the centre because of his pace. I know he prefers to play on the left but his pace would be an asset in the middle."
