Gresley Rovers’ treasurer Peter Jenkinson hid the shattering news from the rest of the club because he didn’t want to ruin the club’s annual dinner on Friday evening.
Jenkinson was told on Friday that Gresley had been rejected but went ahead with the presentation night, celebrating a cup double and a runners-up spot in the Banks’s League.Said Jenkinson: “I have got over the shock now. Unfortunately it was bad at the time – at quarter past four on Friday night when we had the annual presentation dinner and dance. I didn’t want to tell anyone on Friday. I didn’t want to spoil their night.
“It had already spoiled my night and I didn’t want to spoil anyone else’s,” he added. “They have worked so hard through the season; I couldn’t tell anyone. It would have ruined it for the players the committee and everyone.”
Jenkinson said he was facing his painful task tonight: “I have still not told anyone about it I’ll have to ring the committee tonight to tell them.”
