Stapenhill goal ace Brian Beresford is the player most likely to sadden the hearts of Gresley Rovers fans when the Derbyshire Senior Cup final showdown gets underway at the Moat Ground tonight (7.30pm).
The prolific striker’s incredible goalscoring records have long made him one of the most feared men in local football.

Already this season his tally has stretched to more than 50 goals and Swan’s fans know that he may only need one chance to win the cup for the Edge Hill outfit.

Gresley boss Frank Northwood is also well acquainted with Beresford’s talents for spotting an opening.

As a Rovers’ striker Beresford knocked in 93 goals in as many games before joining Stapenhill just over a year ago.

Beresford probably doesn’t have to prove to his former boss that he is still a force to be reckoned with but scoring the winning goal against his old team-mates must be a sweet prospect for the man from Newhall.

“I think players always like playing against their old clubs,” Beresford told the Mail. “And I would certainly love to get on the scoresheet. I’m looking forward to the game immensely. When you get to the final of the Derbyshire Senior Cup you have to expect to play a good side and either Matlock or Buxton would have been difficult games but none more so than Gresley.

“I think for both teams this is the best draw and it has generated a lot of interested in the town. I saw Gresley play Blakenall when they weren’t at their best but there is still no denying they are a good team.”

But equally Beresford knows that Mick Allsop has put together a side worthy of honours at Edge Hill.

“It’s been a tremendous season for us with the league championship already under our belts and the Tebbutt Brown Cup final to come.”
