Rovers tighten grip

Gresley Rovers strengthened their position at the top of the Banks’s League Premier Division with a 3-0 win at bottom club Oldswinford last night.
Now the chase for honours could go all the way to the last day of the season.Rovers have a three-point lead over Rushall Olympic, both having played 35 played, but can be caught by Blakenall, the title favourites, and Halesowen Harriers.
Blakenall’s position worsened, however, on Tuesday night when they crashed to a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Lye Town. They still have to play Halesowen.
After Saturday’s home game against teams in the bottom half of the table – Stourport Swifts (home and away); Westfields (away) and Wednesfield Social (home).
The future of midfielder Ian Wells is in doubt after he was discovered playing Sunday football by Moat boss Frank Northwood at the weekend.
Wells was substituted at half time during Thursday’s 0-0 draw at the Moat Ground with Blakenall. Said to be suffering a groin strain, he missed Saturday’s game against Lye.
But Northwood said last night: “When I did my rounds on Sunday I saw him playing.”
The Gresley manager declined to say whether Wells would be playing again for Rovers but added ominously: “He’s a non-contract player and he won’t be getting any wages again this season.”
