Alan Titterton

Alan Titterton knows exactly what he wants for Christmas - the chance to prove he's the man to make it a prosperous New Year for Gresley Rovers.
Caretaker boss Titterton is aware he faces stiff competition from more than 20 applicants for the managerial vacancy at the Moat Ground.

But after only three games in charge, he hopes he will be given sufficient time to prove his credentials.

Titterton, who met chairman Mark Evans at a South Derbyshire hostelry last night (Thurs), said: "I just hope the board gives me a chance until after Christmas".

The much-respected reserve team chief is likely to get his wish if Evans insists on interviewing "the majority of applicants".

Former King's Lynn boss Gary Mills is still thought to be Gresley's preferred choice, but prising him away from Conference football with Boston United may prove beyond even the persuasive talents of Evans.

Andy Garner, a Moat Ground favourite until his defection to archrivals Burton Albion, has confirmed his interest in the job and other names being linked with the post include former Derby and England defender Davis Nish.

Nish, now a youth coach at Pride Park, has strong connections with the Moat Ground as a former manager and chairman, but has limited knowledge of modern non-league football.

Richard Williams, highly regarded as a youth coach both with the Rams and Aston Villa, could fall into the same category.

Garner, interestingly, is thought to want Titterton to be a key member of his management team, which could appeal to the Gresley board who will surely want to reward the loyalty and unpaid hard work of their caretaker manager.

Rovers, on the other hand, might prefer a less glamorous but dyed-in-the-wool non-league man such as Mark O'Kane, who knows all about running a team on a tight budget at Shepshed.
