Barry Woolley to sign for Ilkeston Town
Barry Woolley
EXCLUSIVE: Gresley Rovers Chairman, Mark Evans, today announced that Barry Woolley is to sign for Ilkeston Town.
Ilkeston previously made an offer for the Gresley defender, but this was rejected by the club. However, last night a new offer came to light, and after discussions this morning, the deal was made.Woolley, who had played previously with Rocester, Burton Albion and Stoke City, was in his second spell with Gresley, and made his (2nd) debut in February 2001.
Mark Evans, who was leaving for a trip to Italy (maybe to find a replacement?!), said: "We had done everything financially and humanly possible to keep Barry at the Moat and they were terms which he accepted.
"He was quite prepared to stay at Gresley but, quite understandibly, was keen to play at a higher level. We had received an initial offer at the end of last season which we rejected. Recently Ilkeston came back with a significantly increased offer which I felt could be the basis of more discussion. That offer was subsequently improved and last night the terms were agreed between the two managers and the player.
"I wish to make it quite clear,Gresley Rovers are not a selling club and the Ilkeston offer was not in the 'cannot refuse' bracket. I have to balance the wishes of the fans, the player and what is best for Gresley Rovers Football Club in the long run and these are decisions which can somtimes weigh heavy.
"We are sorry to see him go, but myself and the club wish him all the best for the future".
