Burton Albion Players’ Player of the Year Nigel Simms has answered an end of season SOS from neighbours Gresley Rovers.
Simms and midfield team mate Gill Land have been given the go-ahead to line up for injury-plagued Rovers in tonight’s Banks’s League Premier Division game at Tipton Town (7pm).And manager Frank Northwood has also drafted in Hednesford Town striker as Gresley attempt to keep alive their hopes of a top three spot.
With three other games to come after tonight’s trip to the Black Country, Rovers are expected to seek Albion’s permission to keep Simms and Land at the Moat Ground until the end of the season.
Brewers’ chairman Sam Brassington said: “Nigel is a contract player, but we are happy for him to help out Gresley tonight. As far as the other games are concerned, a decision will have to be made after the announcement of our manager’s position on Friday.”
Land, a non-contract player, is effectively a free agent since Albion have waived the normal seven days notice of approach.
He said today: “Frank Northwood asked me to join Gresley earlier in the season, but I told him I intended to see the season out with Burton. Now Albion have finished their fixtures, I’m happy to help out. As far as my future at Burton is concerned, I really won’t know anything until I’ve had a chance to speak with the new manager.”
Rovers could be without defender Mark Bromley and leading scorer Martin Devaney for the remainder of the season, while defender Dean Page is doubtful for tonight’s game because of a thigh strain.
