Gresley Rovers keeper Karl Austin is poised to join Banks’s League title rivals Tamworth in a £1,000 deal.
Tamworth boss Graham Smith has already agreed personal terms with the wayward star and the move is expected to be rubber-stamped in time to beat today’s transfer deadline. And it means that Rovers will face their talented, but temperamental star, twice later this month as the title chase reaches its climax.
But Rovers boss Frank Northwood, who vowed never to play Austin again after the keeper failed to turn up for a game earlier this year, defended the decision to sell.
He said last night: “I know some people will question the sense of selling Karl to one of our main rivals, but he’s only one player out of 11. As far as I and Gresley’s committee are concerned, this is a very good piece of business. We’re putting money in the bank by selling a player who wouldn’t have turned out for us anyway.”
