Gresley Rovers coach Phil Marandola has lashed out at clubs unwilling to make midweek journeys to the Moat Ground.
The former Walsall and Bournemouth player arrived at the club just six weeks ago but is already faced with a backlog of fixtures which he believes could wreck Rovers’ title hopes.

He said today: “It will be hard work to win the league now because of the outstanding games. I think we should have had a match this week but a lot of teams don’t want to travel up here for night games. We’ve now got it all to do. Admittedly we have games in hand but others have the points and I would rather be in their position.”

Marandola arrived at Rovers after being forced out of the game with a damaged Achilles, an injury picked up when touring with a West Bromwich Albion side in Barbados.

The former midfield maestro also managed fellow Banks’s Brewery side Wolverhampton United. As a player he has spells with Shrewsbury Town, Walsall and a two-year spell at AFC Bournemouth.

His arrival at the Moat Ground coincides with the introduction of new signings Dean Page from Brereton Social and the experienced Dave Morrison from league title rivals Oldbury United, Morrison netted against his former club in last week’s top-of-the-table clash.

Marandola holds both players in high esteem and is relishing the prospect of a fully fit Morrison ready for next season’s campaign.

“When Dave is fit, he is lethal in front of goal. At the moment although not injured he is not 100 per cent. We were unlucky not to come away with the points from Oldbury last week but we should beat Chasetown. The pitch is likely to be heavy but we need to play and we need to win.”
