Get behind us!

Tomorrow, get behind us for a change. That’s the honest and heart felt plea to Gresley fans from manager Frank Northwood on the eve of what is potentially Rovers’ most searching examination of the season – a Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final against Northern Premier Leaguers Buxton at the Moat Ground.
“We are the underdogs in this game and I’m hoping that the supporters will realise that there’s no way we can go out and beat a team like Buxton by five or six,” Northwood said today.“I know the supporters pay their money at the turnstiles but after five minutes of our game on Tuesday we gave away a corner and the fans were getting on the players’ backs and telling them there was no way we were going to win. I’ve appealed to the fans several times already this season to get behind the team and while I know they won’t support a load of rubbish I would remind them that we’ve only lost once in the league.
“If we were all on form every time we played then football would be entirely predictable and we could all win the pools every week. I was disappointed as any supporter on Tuesday night when we only managed a draw against GKN. I just can’t put my finger on the reason why we’re not doing better at home. Maybe the lads are frightened to try anything in front of the fans.
“But Gresley are one of the teams to beat in the league. Teams aren’t going to come and lie down and be beaten. When I was manager at Wolverhampton United and Malvern I used to be quite happy to come to Gresley because it was easy pickings. That’s not the case now.
“I just wish our supporters would take a leaf out of Tamworth’s book and make a lot of noise when Gresley play.
“There are good times and bad times and we need the fans behind us through the bad times like Tuesday night. A bit of positive support could make all the difference tomorrow.”
