Steve Daley, the former £1m midfieldman, has been sacked by Gresley Rovers after an angry confrontation with manager Frank Northwood.
Daley’s departure from the Moat Ground was hastened on Saturday when the former Wolves and Manchester City star was withdrawn in the second half of the FA Vase clash at RSSC Ransomes.Northwood said today: “He claimed I had humiliated him, but the truth of the matter is that he thinks he is bigger than the club. He also made some very hurtful remarks which seriously made me think about giving up the game.
“Gresley Rovers have been very good to Daley. We’ve been paying him good money, but the fact is that we can’t provide him with a new pair of legs.”
The news of Daley’s release comes hard on the heels of another blow to Gresley’s hopes of lifting the Banks’s League title.
Despite being twice ahead at the Moat Ground last night, Rovers were held to a 3-3 draw by Hinckley Athletic, the Leicestershire side’s equaliser coming with virtually th last kick of the game.
Northwood laid the blame for the loss of another precious point firmly at the feet of the defence.
“We just didn’t defend,” said the Gresley boss. “We know things aren’t right at the back, but we’ll get there. I also think that goalkeeper Karl Austin had to carry the can for their second goal. It was a disappointing result but by no means a disaster. If we get as many points in the second half of the season as the first we’ll be in with a fighting chance of the title.”
