Karl Austin could be on the way back to the Moat Ground in the latest twist to the Gresley Rovers goalkeeper saga.
Austin left Gresley a month ago to pursue his career in American indoor six-a-side league with Wichita. But he is now heading back for Britain after being refused a work permit by US immigration authorities.
And that means Rovers could solve their imminent goalkeeping crisis without having to spend a penny.
Treasurer Peter Jenkinson said today: “Karl is on contract with Gresley until the end of the season, so he must return to us before he can go anywhere.”
Austin’s return will be welcome news for manager Frank Northwood who is searching for a new keeper following the 56-day ban on Bob Aston, Austin’s replacement, for allegedly biting the nose of a rival manager.
Aston begins his ban next Monday, prompting Northwood to inquire about Telford United’s experienced keeper Trevor Dance.
