Keep it up, Rovers

Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood is looking forward to the first serious tests of his side’s Banks’s League title potential.
In the next eight days Rovers host Malvern Town and Oldbury United – two of the teams being widely tipped to be among their main rivals for championship honours.

Northwood said today: “I’m looking forward to meeting two of the better teams in the league and I’m sure the boys feel the same way about it. All I shall be asking of them is to maintain the commitment and pattern of play they’ve produced so far this season.”

Gresley await tomorrow’s visit of Northwood’s old club Malvern with morale sky-high after last Saturday’s 9-1 victory at Oldswinford, where they stretched their 100 per cent record to seven games.

“I know Oldswinford were a poor side, but we still had to do the business,” said the affable Moat Ground maestro. “Some of our one-touch play was brilliant.”

Northwood has dipped into the transfer market this week to fill the breach caused by Karl Austin’s imminent departure to America.

And the man he has turned to – Eastwood Hanley’s Bob Aston – is no stranger to the Moat Ground.

Aston impressed against Gresley in the FA Vase last season and subsequently made a loan appearance for Rovers when Austin was ruled out by injury.

The only disappointment is that Aston has already played in the FA Vase for the Potteries side, so will be cup tied for the first round game at Harworth CW on October 17.

Northwood said: “If we had known a few days earlier about Karl’s intentions, I would have had Aston signed and sealed before Eastwood’s game in the preliminary round. It’s something we’re going to have to live with.”
