Gresley Rovers report back for training tonight celebrating their first major signing of the summer.
Rovers’ wily boss Frank Northwood has held off a stern challenge from Beazer Homes Leaguers Nuneaton Borough to lure 27 year-old central defender Barry Wilcox to the Moat Ground from Hinckley Town.Northwood said: “Nuneaton were very keen on signing Barry, but he was very impressed with our set-up at Gresley and preferred to sign for us.
“The great thing about Barry is that although he’s primarily a centre-half, he can also play centre midfield so it’s like signing two players.”
Rovers begin their Bank’s League Premier Division campaign at home to Tividale on August 15th. The following Tuesday they are away to neighbours Hinckley Athletic, before returning to the Moat Ground to meet promoted Westfields on August 22nd.
Gresley begin their build-up by meeting Chesterfield at the Moat Ground on July 30th in the annual challenge match for the Centenary Rose Bowl.
They have friendlies at home to Dudley Town (August 1st) and Shepshed Charterhouse (August 4th) and away to Hinckley Town (August 8th) and Banks’s League Division One newcomers Rocester (August 11th).
