Mark Evans with new Moat boss Jon Newsome

Jon Newsome, a former Leeds United, Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday defender, has been appointed manager of Gresley Rovers Football Club.
Jon was introduced by chairman Mark Evans at a Press Conference held at the Moat Ground on Wednesday evening (5.30pm).

Jon Newsome first joined Sheffield Wednesday in July 1989 and made 10 appearances before being sold to Leeds United in July 1991 where he made 89 appearances culminating in a League Champions medal and a Charity Shield winner's medal.

In July 1994,Jon was transferred to Norwich City becoming their first £1 million signing making 76 appearances for the Canaries. He transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in February 1996 taking his career in a full circle.

During his second spell with Sheffield Wednesday he became a regular at centre back. Jon unfortunately suffered a serious injury in the FA Cup quarter finals against Wimbledon and was ruled out for the remainder of the 1996-97 season. By the end of the 1997/98 season, Jon had only made 43 appearances for the Owls but had 4 goals to his record.

In November 1998 Jon joined Bolton Wanderers on a month's loan making 6 appearances.

Jon NewsomeThe Daily Mirror claimed in February 1998 that Ron Atkinson was to sign Jon for his beleagued Nottingham Forest defence. Supposedly this £1.5million deal was arranged before Forest conceded 8 at home to a rampant Manchester United.

Birmingham City made a bid of £1.5 million for Jon in mid February 1999 as a replacement for the injured Gary Ablett.

Jon was placed on the transfer list at the end of May 1999 with Wednesday seeking £1.5 million for his services as they attempted to rebuild their side.

In May 2000, Jon announced his retirement from the game, at the early age of 29, due to his knee injury.

Since finishing his playing career Jon has been an Academy coach at Sheffield Wednesday and a Centre of Excellence coach with Grimsby Town as well as being a first team scout.

Newsome's appointment continues Gresley's trend of appointing former professionals who are looking to start in management.
Amongst the list are the likes of Garry Birtles, Gary Mills, Paul Futcher and, of course, the most recent, John McGinlay.

The new manager saw his side draw 2-2 with Alfreton Town on Wednesday night in the first-leg of the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final at Moat Street.
