Gresley Rovers snapped up Burton Albion’s John Bottomley while Brewers’ bosses debated the young defender’s future.
Albion manager Brian Fidler and chairman Dave Mellor were still holding talks with Bottomley when Gresley manager Frank Northwood stepped in to clinch the deal.Mr Northwood said: “Albion’s loss is our gain. I have watched Bottomley on several occasions and he has impressed me. He wanted first team football and I think we can offer him a regular spot at Gresley.”
Bottomley was immediately pressed into action in Gresley’s friendly this afternoon.
Mr Northwood said: “I intend to use John as a sweeper but he can play in a variety of positions.”
Albion chairman Dave Mellor was disappointed at Bottomley’s decision.
He said: “I knew Gresley were interested, but John told me he would talk with me and Brian Fidler further before he made a decision. We can’t guarantee anybody a first team place though at Burton Albion and John is young and ambitious and we can’t stand in his way.”
As Bottomley was not under contract to Albion no fee was involved in the move.
