David Rider
David Rider
It is with great sadness that we report the death of David Rider on Sunday after a long illness.
David was well known locally as a sports reporter and with his work with local radio BBC Radio Derby and latterly with Asbourne Radio. David's association with Gresley Rovers goes back a long way and his regular live match updates on Radio Derby during Rovers' Southern League days were always popular and well received.
When Gresley's website began to include audio interviews, David could be seen with a microphone in his hand happily interviewing Gary Norton after matches and also several of the players and according to the website stats were also very well received.
David, when available, could also be heard in the Moat Ground as the public address announcer.
Before his illness David took on the role as Commercial Manager for the club helping to bring in much needed sponsorship and continued until he felt it was time to hand the job over.
David was also involved with many local charities including YMCA and Swadlincote Chamber of Trade and will be sadly missed.
Everyone at Gresley FC send their deepest condolences to David's wife Di, son Darren and to all his family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.
David's funeral service will take place on Friday 17th August at St George and St Marys church, Church Gresley at 10.30am followed by committal at Bretby Crematorium.
The family has requested that no black be worn.
