Phil Gee was today expected to complete his remarkable transfer to Derby County – smashing Gresley Rovers’ record fee in the process.
Gees’ move to the Baseball Ground could be worth a total of £5,000 for Rovers – a massive boost to the club’s resources. The 20-year-old painter and decorator is going through the club’s medical this morning and the deal is expected to be completed today.
The precise details of the deal are being kept under wraps by both clubs.
But Rovers will receive an initial payment of £2,000 plus another payment if he completes ten first team games and an extra one when he makes 25 appearances.
The total value of the deal if Gee reaches both of those two milestones will amount to £5,000.
In addition the Rams will send their full first team to the Moat Ground for a friendly in the near future.
Derby has moved with astonishing speed to sign Gee who has played just five games for Rovers scoring six goals.
He previously played in the Midland Combination for Bloxwich Town and was signed by Rovers manager Frank Northwood after being recommended by Burton Albion centre-half Steve Essex.
Coventry City were also showing an interest in the talented striker.
Former Derby star David Nish now chairman at the Moat Ground, said: “ I’m very pleased for the club but also I’m delighted for the lad as well.
“What impressed me most about him was his tremendous pace and I hope he can fulfil his ambitions in the League.”
Derby County secretary Michael Dunford said: “We’re very pleased with the deal and so are Gresley so it’s a good piece of business all round. It’s good that we should have a close relationship with one of our local teams like Gresley,” he added.
Rovers’ previous record transfer was the £900 they received from Barnsley for Gordon Duggins in 1954.
