Captain Simmo
Andy Simpson with Gary Norton
Gresley boss Gary Norton has handed Andy Simpson the Gresley Rovers captaincy for the new season.
Simpson takes over the armband from the retired Matt Smith who had skippered the side for the past two seasons. On the appointment of his new captain Norton commented: "When considering who to make skipper there were one or two other good candidates in the squad and it was a difficult choice. In Simmo we see someone who will be good for the team on the pitch as well as off it. He is passionate about the club, has good leadership qualities, is experienced and is someone who will lead by example and is very professional in his approach to things." The decision comes as no real surprise after Simpson skippered the side in most pre season friendlies along with Gary White and new signings Alan Davies and Matt Millns. Norton added: "All were in contention and would I'm sure have done a great job. Gaz White deputised for Matt Smith last season but having only just turned 22 I felt it best that we didn't burden him with the full time captaincy and allow him to concentrate and fully focus on his game. Alan and Matt have just joined the club and settled in very well but again it was perhaps a little early to give either of those the captaincy as they are still getting to know everyone."
Simpson was delighted with the news and is really looking forward to the challenge. He said: "I knew I was in with a shout as I'd captained the side for a few games during preseason. It's a great honour to be named as captain for Gresley and I'm really looking forward to it. We have got a good squad together and the mood in the dressing room is great. We are really up for the challenge ahead and hope to achieve something for the club this season."
