Gresley Rovers have today confirmed that midfielder Carl Slater has left the club in search of regular football.
Last season's supporter's player of the year has only started one game this term and has been frustrated at his lack of opportunities in the side.

Manager Gary Norton commented, "I'm very, very sorry to see Carl go, especially with him being a friend of mine and breaking into the 1st team originally under Jon Newsome after coming through the Reserve Team when I was manager.

Carl had an excellent season for us last year but has found his opportunities somewhat limited this season. In the summer we brought in new players to strengthen the squad and competition in the midfield area has been fierce. The solid start we have had and a lack of injuries to players have meant that we have been able to keep a settled side and as such, Carl's opportunities have been limited.

We initially chatted about his situation a few weeks ago and I told him that he was very much part of my plans and even offered him a contract till the end of the season to reinforce the fact. More recently we discussed at his request him going out on loan to get some games.

Carl has been very professional about the situation and to be fair to Carl, all he wants to do is play football. He is a local lad and he loves Gresley. He isn't even bothered about playing for money which is very refreshing attitude in this day and age. However, I have decisions to make, and cannot let my heart rule my head. I will continue to make decisions based on what I feel is best for Gresley Rovers Football Club. In that respect it has meant that Ashley and Jamie have held down their shirts which has meant that Carl and Andy Simpson have had limited opportunities.

The situation has been equally difficult for both Carl and me because of our friendship off the pitch. That said, as a Club we move on and Id like to place on record my thanks to Carl for his efforts whilst at the club and wish him all the very best in his football future."

Chairman Mark Evans echoed Gary's comments, "Carl has been very professional about his football, and I know it has been a difficult decision for him to take â€" he absolutely adores the Club, but wants to play regular â€" whilst I understand his decision I will be sad to lose Carl, but nevertheless wish him all the very best for the future".
