Mr Reliable signs on for another season
Richard Wardle

Richard Wardle

Richard Wardle has agreed terms to remain with Gresley Rovers for what will be an unbelievable 14th season at the Moat Ground.
Gary Norton commented "Richard had indicated during the course of last season that it may be his last at this level, but I had hoped that I'd be able to persuade him otherwise – I am delighted that he has agreed to sign for another season at least"

"Richard is a player of immense experience, quality and versatility and those traits is a rare breed at this level of football. To hang onto him for the forthcoming season is a huge boost to the club. His positional flexibility is second to none and he can operate comfortably in just about every position on the pitch as he did do on many occasions last season.

"With a small squad like ours having one or two players with that little bit of versatility is priceless and makes life as a manager a little bit easier.

"Richard is very professional in all aspects of his game and it's an absolute pleasure as a manager to have a player like him around the club. With so much experience he was often a great council and support to me last season and I'm sure he will do the same again this time round."

Cannock based Wardle, 33, joined from Tamworth in October 1991, and made his full debut for Rovers in a 4-0 victory in the West Midlands Premier League. His 1st goal for the club came in April of that same season against Blakenall and it was a goal that clinched Rovers the title. "

He has played over 620 games in 13 seasons at the club and holds the current appearances record after beating the previous record of 563 back in March 2003. His crowing season in a Rovers shirt was undoubtedly in 1996-1997 when he was a regular member of the side that clinched the Southern League Championship.

Mark Evans, Chairman added, "I am very pleased that he has decided to remain with us, Richard is a truly remarkable individual; he has a very professional and measured personality, an almost unassuming nature, but nevertheless plays with such determination and desire. He has experience, versatility, and an ability to adapt; he approaches each game, now in excess of 620 with the same attitude as if it was one in his first season. "

"He has been of great support to me; his family are keen and supportive followers of the Club – home and away. He has dedicated a lot of time and energy to Gresley Rovers"
