When Stuart Evans led Gresley Rovers onto the field against Cheltenham on Saturday as team captain for the first time in his Moat Ground career, it was a measure of the high regard of management and team mates at the club for the popular defender.
Although, at 22, Evans is still one of the youngest players in Rovers ranks, his consistency since joining the South Derbyshire club from Wolves made him the natural choice as skipper with Richard Denby injured and Gil Land left out.

One of Evans’ biggest fans is Gresley boss Steve Dolby – himself a distinguished centre back during his playing career with Burton and Gresley.

Said Dolby: “I named Stuart as captain because he’s probably our most consistent player – it’s very seldom he has a bad game. He’s responded by having an excellent game at Cheltenham – I thought he was easily the best defender on the pitch and capped that off by making our goal for us.”

Dolby is now looking forward to seeing Evans in action against big-spending Sittingbourne at the Moat Ground tomorrow.

He said: “They’re supposed to have some very good players including a centre back they rate at £220,000 – they’re reported to have rejected a £150,000 bid for him from Norwich.

“That should act as an incentive to our forwards, to try and get better of their defence and score against them. I’m certainly looking forward to comparing their highly rated centre half with Stuart and it should be an interesting comparison. The last thing I want is to lose Stuart but I know he’s capable of playing at a higher level and I just can’t believe that league clubs aren’t watching him at the moment.”
