Rovers race into the title frame

The battle for the Beazer Midland title took a new twist at the weekend as Gresley Rovers kept up their challenge with a 2-0 victory at Racing Club Warwick.
While goals from Mark Hurst and Martin Devaney were giving Gresley a comfortable win at Hampton Road, promotion rivals Barri kept up the heat by winning 3-1 at leaders Nuneaton Borough.The win left the Welshmen two points behind Gresley, with Rovers due to visit Barri at their temporary Worcester home a week today in a game that could decide which of the two clubs makes the step up to Premier Division status next season.
Rovers boss Steve Dolby said after Saturday’s win: “The result at Nuneaton was a bad one for us but it means that if we win all our games we’ll be champions – and we’ll be trying to do that.”
Rovers continue their quest with a home game against King’s Lynn – who virtually ended Bedworth United’s promotion hopes with a 1-0 win at The Oval on Saturday – tomorrow.
Striker Paul Acklam and midfielder Tony Marsden as still ruled out by injury, but Dolby hopes midfielder Richard Wardle, who missed the second half of Saturday’s win with concussion, will be fit to return while full back Dave Swainston is available again after missing seven games through suspension and work commitments.
