Marsden explained after the 4-1 trouncing of Kings Lynn: “I’m disappointed with my performance. I gave the ball away too much – and that’s not our game.”

But the 23-year-old midfielder revealed one of the secrets behind Rovers’ winning start to their first Beazer Homes League season when he explained: “You can’t play well every week and when one of us has had a bad game the rest of the lads rally round.

“That’s what they did for me today and that helped me to get a couple of goals – at least I thought it was a couple, but me and Mike Taplin are in discussion about one of them.”

In fact, Taplin eventually got the credit for Rovers’ third goal after getting the faintest of touches to Marsden’s shot – but the names on the scoresheet take second place to the result.

“What matters is the team at the moment is playing well – the spirit was there despite all our injuries and at the end of the game we’ve made them look like nothing.”

And there’s better yet to come, vows the former Grantham skipper who has turned out to be a key summer signing for manager Steve Dolby.

“I’m not quite fit yet after being suspended for three weeks – I suffer when I’m out and go unfit very quickly. But it’s coming – we all played really well against Burton – we were all pleased with that result.

“It’s all there for us in the second leg – the belief is there that we can beat them on Tuesday and if we carry on playing the way we have been doing there’s no reason why we shouldn’t do it.

“Why not? We were much stronger than them in the last half an hour at Eton Park. We were organised in defence, the work-rate was there and we played good football. It’s just a matter of having the belief that we can do it. They’re saying we won’t know how to approach the game, whether to sit on our lead or go looking for more. But we won’t change our style. Look at our ‘goals for’ column and it shows we are an attacking side.

“You don’t start suddenly defending because you’re playing a Premier Division side – if you do you get demolished.”
