Barry career doubt
Story courtesy of Burton Mail
Gresley Rovers defender John Barry faces a possible two-year battle for fitness after a horrific work accident – and may never play football again.
Barry, 24, broke a thigh bone when he fell through a ceiling at work. He underwent an emergency operation to insert steel plates in the leg but doctors have now revealed the extent of the injury is even worse than was first feared.Rovers committee man Rod Summers said: “John is out of hospital but the break is even worse than we first thought. It is a diagonal fracture and they have had to put three plates in his leg.”
Barry now faces long hours of physiotherapy to avoid muscle waste and Summers said: “There is a serious doubt if he will play football again.”
Meanwhile, legions of Gresley fans have sent the full back their “get well soon wishes” after two giant cards circulated the Moat Ground before the FA Cup match against Gainsborough last Saturday.
Summers said: “There were literally hundreds of signatures.”
The club has also chipped in with flowers and chocolates and plans are underway for a fund-raising projects for the Long Eaton-based player.
