Despite two wins in two games – the impressive demolition of Bridgnorth Town following hard on the heels on the opening day victory over Dudley – it could be argued even at this stage of the campaign that Rovers have so far met sides destined to be at best also rans in the title stakes come May.

Gresley will get a much clearer idea of what lies in store for them this season when former Burton Albion boss Chris Wright brings his Sutton Coldfield Town side to the Moat Ground on Monday afternoon.

Sutton finished third last season behind promoted Solihull and Hednesford and will give a much better indication of the standard in Rovers’ new league.

Nonetheless, a winning start has been a big boost to Rovers’ confidence after an anxious count-down to the big kick off.

There was an air of tension around the Moat before the Dudley game that dissipated dramatically when Stuart Evans and Robbie Briscoe got the goals to see off the visitors.

Evans admitted afterwards: “It’s nice to have got that one out of the way – we can settle down now. Even though we all know there’s a long way to go yet we’ve got enough good players to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”

The former Wolves defender also paid tribute to the part played by Rovers’ fans in the win.

“We were expecting a good crowd and that’s what we got which was very pleasing. There’s always a good turnout and the fans are always good for us.”

Meanwhile, Dolby stuck with a winning side for Tuesday’s Bridgnorth trip but faces a difficult choice for tomorrow’s visit of Ansell’s Combination side Highgate United after Paul Acklam’s successful appearance from the substitute’s bench.

Said Dolby: “Paul knows there’s a lot of competition for places. He came on for half an hour, scored two goals and made a big contribution. But having said that I’m not planning too many changes.”
